ChatGPT SEO Tools: How to Connect Real Keyword Data to ChatGPT
ChatGPT cannot see live search data on its own. Here is how to connect DataWise to ChatGPT in about two minutes so it answers SEO questions with real volume, difficulty and CPC.
You can connect ChatGPT to a real SEO data source in about two minutes. Once connected, ChatGPT stops estimating search volume from memory and starts returning live keyword, competitor, backlink and Search Console data that you can check. This guide shows the setup, the prompts, and the limits worth knowing before you rely on it.
TL;DR
- ChatGPT on its own has no access to live search data. Any volume or difficulty number it gives you is recalled from training data, not measured.
- Connecting DataWise through a custom connector gives ChatGPT 14 read-only SEO tools, covering keyword research, competitors, backlinks, local SEO, rank tracking and Google Search Console.
- Setup takes four steps and needs a paid ChatGPT plan with developer mode turned on.
- The connector reads. It never edits your site, your projects or your settings.
- Everything here is included with your AI Ranking membership.
What are ChatGPT SEO tools?
ChatGPT SEO tools are connectors that let ChatGPT call a real SEO data source during a conversation instead of answering from memory. DataWise exposes 14 read-only tools this way, so a single question can return live search volume, keyword difficulty, competitor rankings and your own Search Console numbers, all inside the chat.
The connection runs on the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for giving an assistant access to external tools. You add one address, sign in with your DataWise account, and approve access. Nothing is installed.
Using ChatGPT for SEO is not the same as ranking in ChatGPT
Two different jobs share one phrase, and mixing them up wastes a lot of effort. Using ChatGPT for SEO means the assistant does your research: keywords, competitors, backlinks. Ranking in ChatGPT means getting your own pages cited when someone else asks a question. The first is a workflow. The second is visibility.
This article covers the first. If you came here for the second, the work is called generative engine optimization, and it is measured by tracking whether AI engines mention and cite your domain. Start with our guide to AI visibility, then see the AI Visibility tracker.
The two connect in one place. Once DataWise is attached to ChatGPT, you can ask it how often your domain appears in AI answers, so the assistant doing your research can also report on your visibility inside AI answers.
Why ChatGPT alone cannot do keyword research
Ask ChatGPT for the search volume of a keyword and it will usually give you a number. That number is a recollection, not a measurement. The model has no connection to Google Ads data, no crawler, and no view of your Search Console. It cannot tell you what changed last month, and it has no way to flag when it does not know.
This matters most where the stakes are highest. Commercial keywords in trades and professional services carry some of the highest click costs in search, so choosing the wrong target wastes both content budget and ad budget. In our own data pull for Melbourne plumbing terms on 13 September 2026, cost per click ranged from $39.61 to $46.07. Guessing at volume in that market is expensive.
A connector fixes the specific problem. The reasoning stays with ChatGPT. The facts come from a source you can audit.

The full connection takes under three minutes, start to finish.
How to connect DataWise to ChatGPT
Four steps, in order. You need a paid ChatGPT plan, because custom connectors sit behind developer mode, and a DataWise account with an active membership.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Connectors, then Advanced, and turn on Developer mode.
- Back in Connectors, choose Create. Name it DataWise, paste the server address below, set Authentication to OAuth, then click Create.
- A DataWise tab opens. Sign in with your DataWise account if asked, then click Allow.
- In any chat, open the + menu, choose Developer mode, tick DataWise, and ask your question.
The server address is:
https://mcp.datawiseseo.com/mcp
Type it exactly. It ends in /mcp with nothing after it, and a trailing character is the single most common reason a connection fails.
Prefer Claude, Claude Desktop or Claude Code? The same address works there, and the steps for each are on the DataWise MCP feature page.
What you can ask once it is connected
Start your question with “use DataWise” so ChatGPT reaches for the connector instead of answering from memory. The 14 tools fall into six groups.
- Keyword research. Keyword ideas, volume, difficulty, CPC and intent for up to 50 terms at a time, plus the People Also Ask questions Google shows.
- Competitor analysis. A domain overview, every keyword a site ranks for, its closest organic competitors, and the gaps between two domains.
- Backlinks. Backlink totals, individual links, referring domains and anchor text.
- AI visibility. How often a domain is mentioned in Google AI Mode and ChatGPT answers, plus your own tracked AI visibility results.
- Local SEO. A Google Business Profile audit with recommendations, profile details, reviews and rating trends.
- Your own data. Rank tracking projects with position history, and Search Console clicks, impressions, CTR and position.
The best ChatGPT prompts for SEO
A good prompt for a connected assistant does three things: it names the market, it asks for specific fields, and it tells the model what to do when data is missing. That last part matters most, because an unconstrained model will fill a gap with a plausible guess rather than say the number was unavailable.
Five that earn their place in a weekly routine. Copy any of them, replace what is in brackets, and paste it into a chat with DataWise enabled.
Build a keyword plan from one seed
Use DataWise to research keywords related to [your service] in [country and language]. Return 15 relevant ideas with available search volume and difficulty. Mark any missing provider values as unknown rather than estimating them. Group the keywords by intent, then suggest three content briefs and explain your priorities.
Find the gaps worth chasing
Use DataWise to compare [my domain] with [competitor domain] in [country and language]. Return 20 keyword gaps with available volume and difficulty. Recommend the five that best fit my business, say why you rejected the others, and note that this comparison uses the top 300 keywords per domain rather than every keyword.
Find pages losing clicks they already earned
List my connected DataWise Search Console properties and ask me which one to use. Then show the last 30 days of queries with high impressions and low CTR. Report position and CTR for each, state the reporting period returned, and suggest what to investigate without inventing a cause.
Check whether AI answers mention you
Use DataWise to check how often [my domain] is mentioned in AI answers over the last month, compared with [competitor one] and [competitor two]. Summarize mentions and citations where available, state the observation dates, and tell me plainly if data is missing for any domain.
Turn a Google Business Profile into a fix list
Use DataWise to audit the Google Business Profile for [business name] in [city]. Review profile completeness, recent reviews and rating trend. Give me an ordered checklist of fixes, most impactful first, and explain what evidence each recommendation is based on.
Every one of these ends by telling the model what to do when data is missing. That single instruction is the difference between a report you can act on and a confident guess.
A worked example
Here is a real request and what came back. The prompt was “use DataWise to find keyword ideas for emergency plumber melbourne”, run on 13 September 2026 against the Australian market.
| Keyword | Volume | Difficulty | CPC |
|---|---|---|---|
| melbourne emergency plumber | 1,000 | 16 | $46.07 |
| emergency plumber melbourne cbd | 880 | 19 | $39.61 |
| emergency plumber melbourne | 880 | 16 | $39.61 |
| 24 hour emergency plumber melbourne | 50 | 21 | $0.00 |
The useful part is what happens next. Because the numbers are in the conversation, you can ask ChatGPT to group them by intent, draft a brief for the strongest one, or explain why a term with 50 searches might still be worth a page. The analysis is only as good as the data underneath it, and now the data is real.

The limits worth knowing
Three honest constraints.
It is read only. The connector retrieves data and reports on it. It cannot publish an article, edit your website, create a tracking project or start a crawl. ChatGPT can draft recommendations from the results, but every change is still yours to make.
Live research draws on a daily allowance. The tools that request provider data count against a daily data allowance per member, and rate limits apply. Reading your stored Search Console, rank tracking and AI visibility data does not draw on it, so those keep working either way. Your current usage is visible in DataWise settings.
It is still an AI. The assistant can misread a table or round a number. Check anything that will drive a real decision inside DataWise before you act on it.
Is SEO dead now that AI answers the question?
No, but the destination changed. Search still decides which pages an AI engine reads before it answers, so the work that earns a citation is largely the work that earned a ranking. What changes is measurement: a page can influence an answer without receiving the click, which is why mention and citation tracking now sits alongside position tracking.
The practical shift is that you now optimize for two readers. One is a person scanning results. The other is a model assembling an answer from a handful of sources. Clear structure, a direct answer near the top, and sourced specifics serve both, which is why the technique tends to pay twice.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT do SEO optimization? ChatGPT can analyze, prioritize and draft, but on its own it cannot measure. Connected to a data source it can do both: real volume and difficulty come from the connector, and the interpretation comes from the model. Without a connector, treat any number it produces as an unverified estimate.
Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan? Yes. Custom connectors live behind developer mode, which requires a paid ChatGPT plan. If you would rather not pay for one, the same DataWise connector works in Claude, and Claude’s custom connector setup is a three-step process.
Does ChatGPT use Google for search data? No. ChatGPT can browse the web for pages, but it has no access to Google Ads keyword data, keyword difficulty or your Search Console. Browsing tells it what a page says. It does not tell it how many people search a term or how hard that term is to rank for. A connector is what supplies those numbers.
Which AI tool is best for SEO? The better question is which one reaches real data. A model with a live SEO connector will outperform a stronger model working from memory, because the limiting factor in SEO work is data accuracy rather than reasoning. DataWise connects to ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Desktop, Claude Code and any client supporting remote MCP.
Is my data safe? You sign in on DataWise, never inside ChatGPT. The connector receives permission to read your data, not your password, and you can disconnect it or revoke a token at any time from DataWise settings. Data returned into a chat is then subject to that assistant’s own data handling terms.
What does it cost? Nothing extra. MCP access is included with your AI Ranking membership, alongside every other DataWise tool. You still need your own ChatGPT plan for developer mode.
