Keyword Research for Small Business: A Practical Guide

Nicolas Gorrono ·

Keyword research does not need to be complicated or expensive. If you are a small business owner or solo consultant, you need a focused approach that delivers results without drowning you in data.

Start with what you know

Before touching any tool, list the services you offer and the problems your customers ask about. These are your seed keywords. A plumber in Austin might start with “emergency plumber Austin”, “water heater repair Austin”, and “drain cleaning near me”.

Take each seed keyword and find related terms. DataWise’s Related Keywords tool shows semantically connected keywords that share search intent. This helps you discover variations you might not have considered.

For example, “emergency plumber Austin” might lead you to “24 hour plumber Austin TX”, “burst pipe repair Austin”, and “plumbing emergency service Austin”.

Check difficulty before committing

Not every keyword is worth targeting. A keyword with 50,000 monthly searches and extreme difficulty is not realistic for a small business to rank for. Look for keywords with reasonable search volume and lower difficulty scores.

The sweet spot is usually keywords with moderate volume (100-1,000 monthly searches) and low to medium difficulty. These are achievable targets that can drive real business.

Map keywords to pages

Once you have your keyword list, assign each keyword to a specific page on your site. Every page should target one primary keyword and a few supporting terms. Avoid having multiple pages compete for the same keyword.

Track and iterate

Keyword research is not a one-time exercise. Track your rankings for target keywords, see what is working, and adjust your strategy based on real data.
