OpenAI Dots for SEO: Give Your Dot Real SEO Data

OpenAI's dots work in the background around the clock, but they can't see your rankings or search volume. Connect DataWise and give your dot weekly SEO jobs.

Nicolas Gorrono ·

OpenAI’s dots are always-on agents that keep working on your goals while you’re away. That makes them a natural fit for the repetitive side of SEO: checking rankings, watching Search Console, keeping an eye on competitors. The catch is that a dot has no SEO data of its own. This guide shows how to connect your dot to DataWise and the five recurring SEO jobs worth handing it.

TL;DR

  • Dots are persistent ChatGPT agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each one has its own cloud computer and browser and keeps working when your laptop is closed.
  • A dot uses the plugins installed on your ChatGPT account, so connecting DataWise once in ChatGPT gives your dot 14 read-only SEO tools.
  • On ChatGPT Pro, custom MCP servers are limited to read and fetch. DataWise only reads, so that limit doesn’t get in the way.
  • Dots can be used for SEO, but only for the parts that need fresh data and follow-up. They can’t measure anything on their own.
  • The best use is recurring work: a weekly Search Console check, rank movers, competitor gaps, AI mentions and Google Business Profile reviews.
  • DataWise, connector included, comes with your AI Ranking membership.

What are OpenAI dots?

Dots are always-on AI agents inside ChatGPT. OpenAI launched them on September 29, 2026, at DevDay. Each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, has its own cloud computer and browser, and works toward goals you set in the background, asking for your input only when a decision needs you.

According to OpenAI’s announcement, dots can reach more than 4,000 apps and carry context between ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams. You start with one primary dot that you name yourself. TechCrunch’s launch coverage describes OpenAI’s longer-term plan as teams of specialist dots working together on your behalf.

The part that matters for SEO is persistence. A normal chat forgets the task the moment you close it. OpenAI’s dots documentation says a dot runs on its own computer in the cloud, so it can keep working while your computer is off, and it decides for itself when to pause and resume.

Who can use dots right now?

Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise plans. OpenAI says the first dot is included at no extra cost on eligible plans, and Enterprise administrators have to switch dots on before anyone in the workspace can use them.

Per OpenAI’s dots documentation, Pro access covers users over 18 outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, while Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out worldwide. The rollout is gradual, so an eligible account may not see its dot straight away.

Why can’t a dot do SEO on its own?

A dot has no built-in access to search volume, keyword difficulty, Google rankings, backlink data or AI search mentions. Its cloud browser can read your pages, but reading a page won’t tell it that the page ranks 17th or that its main keyword gets 2,900 searches a month.

That’s a bigger problem for an agent than for a chatbot. When you ask a question in chat, you can see the answer and catch a guess. A dot working in the background reports conclusions you didn’t watch it reach. If those conclusions rest on recalled numbers instead of measured ones, you get confident weekly reports built on nothing.

The fix is the same one I use for Claude and regular ChatGPT: connect a live SEO data source through an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, so the agent fetches real numbers before it reasons about them.

Can dots be used for SEO?

Yes, as long as you give them real SEO data. A dot can read pages in its own browser, keep working on a task for weeks, follow up on a schedule and write up what changed. What it can’t do alone is measure: rankings, search volume, backlinks and AI mentions all have to come from a connected data source.

That makes dots strongest at the SEO work that’s mostly about consistency. Monitoring, reporting and spotting changes early all fit, because the value comes from checking every week, not from one brilliant insight. OpenAI says dots learn from your feedback over time, so a weekly report should get closer to what you actually want after a few rounds of corrections.

They’re weaker at anything that changes your site. Under OpenAI’s dots safety rules, proactive research is read-only, and actions that affect your accounts go through a review step first. Publishing a rewritten page still needs a CMS plugin plus your approval, which is how it should be.

How do you do SEO with dots?

Doing SEO with a dot comes down to five steps: connect a live SEO data source, test it in a normal chat, give the dot one recurring job with a clear schedule, send the reports to where you work, and correct the first few reports so the dot learns what you want.

  1. Connect your data. Add DataWise as a plugin in ChatGPT. Your dot uses whatever plugins your account has, so this is a one-time job. The steps are below.
  2. Test before you delegate. Run one question in a regular chat first, so you know the connector returns real numbers.
  3. Give one job at a time. Start with a single weekly check, like the Search Console report further down, with a time zone and an end date.
  4. Route the output. Ask the dot to post its report in Slack or Teams, so it reaches you without you opening ChatGPT.
  5. Correct it early. Tell the dot what was useful and what wasn’t after the first two or three reports. Then add the next job.

Resist the urge to hand over everything on day one. One job that works is worth more than five that each need checking.

How does a dot connect to other tools?

A dot uses the plugins already installed and enabled on your ChatGPT account. There’s no separate app store for dots. Once a plugin is connected and permitted in ChatGPT, your dot can use it.

OpenAI’s page on dots, computers and apps puts it plainly: your existing ChatGPT app permissions apply to your dot, and access depends on each plugin’s connected account and permissions. Its example is allowing a dot to read email without allowing it to send email. A plugin, in OpenAI’s model, can bundle an MCP server, skills and other capabilities (OpenAI plugins docs).

DataWise isn’t in OpenAI’s plugin directory yet, so you add it yourself as a custom MCP server. That’s a one-time job in ChatGPT, and your dot picks it up from there.

How do you connect your dot to DataWise?

Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT, add DataWise as a custom MCP server at https://mcp.datawiseseo.com/mcp, sign in with your DataWise account, then confirm the plugin is enabled. Setup has to happen on desktop, in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser.

  1. In ChatGPT Settings, turn on Developer mode. OpenAI has moved this switch between releases, so if you can’t find it, search your settings for “Developer mode”. On a Business or Enterprise workspace, your admin may need to allow it.
  2. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, select the + button and choose Add custom MCP server.
  3. Name it “DataWise SEO” and paste the server address below into the connection field.
  4. Set authentication to OAuth, read the risk warning, confirm, and choose Create as a plugin.
  5. A DataWise tab opens. Sign in if asked, then click Allow.
  6. Check that ChatGPT lists the DataWise tools and that the plugin is switched on. A dot can’t see a plugin that’s turned off.

The server address is:

https://mcp.datawiseseo.com/mcp

It ends in /mcp with nothing after it. OpenAI’s developer guide for connecting MCP servers requires the full URL including that path, and a stray trailing character is the most common reason a connection fails.

Before you give your dot any SEO work, test the connector in a normal chat. Ask “use DataWise to show me the domain overview for [your domain]”. If real numbers come back, your dot can use the same tools. The DataWise MCP feature page has the full tool list.

Does the ChatGPT Pro plan limit what DataWise can do?

No. OpenAI’s help center says Pro users can connect custom MCP servers with read and fetch permissions only, while full MCP is reserved for Business, Enterprise and Edu (OpenAI help: MCP in ChatGPT). Every DataWise tool is read-only, so Pro users get the full connector.

This is a real constraint for connectors that publish posts or edit content. It doesn’t apply here. The DataWise connector retrieves research and reports on your stored data. It never edits your website, creates projects or starts crawls.

What SEO work should you give your dot?

Give your dot the recurring checks you know you should run every week but usually skip. Anything that needs fresh data on a schedule and a short written summary is a good fit. One-off deep research still belongs in a normal chat, where you can steer it as it goes.

The dot itself suggests when to check back, but OpenAI recommends giving it a time zone and a duration or end date when you want updates at a specific time, then asking it to confirm the schedule. Each prompt below does exactly that.

Copy any of these, replace what’s in brackets, and send it to your dot.

Search Console

Weekly pages-losing-clicks report

Every Monday at 8am [your time zone] until [end date], use only the DataWise connector to read my Search Console data for [your property]. Compare the last 7 days with the 7 days before. List the five pages that lost the most clicks, with clicks, impressions, CTR and average position for both periods. Say plainly if data is missing, never estimate a number, and don't suggest a cause you can't support with the data. Confirm this schedule back to me before the first run.

Rank tracking

Weekly rank movers

Every Friday at 4pm [your time zone] until [end date], use only the DataWise connector to read my rank tracking project for [domain]. Report every keyword that moved three or more positions since last week, grouped into winners and losers, with the old and new position. Flag any keyword that dropped off page 1. Keep it under 200 words. Confirm the schedule before the first run.

Competitors

Monthly competitor gap watch

On the first day of each month until [end date], use only the DataWise connector to compare [my domain] with [competitor domain] in [country and language]. Return the 10 keyword gaps with the best mix of search volume and low difficulty that fit a business that sells [what you sell]. Remember which gaps you reported last month and tell me what's new. Mark missing values as unknown.

AI visibility

Monthly AI mentions check

On the first Monday of each month until [end date], use only the DataWise connector to check how often [my domain] is mentioned in AI answers compared with [competitor one] and [competitor two]. Report mentions per engine, the observation dates, and whether each domain went up or down since your last report. If a domain has no data, say it wasn't found in the sample rather than calling it zero.

Local SEO

Weekly Google Business Profile review digest

Every Wednesday at 9am [your time zone] until [end date], use only the DataWise connector to read the latest reviews and rating trend for the Google Business Profile of [business name] in [city]. Summarize new reviews since last week, flag any review of 3 stars or lower, and draft a short, friendly reply for each flagged review for me to approve. Don't post anything.

Every prompt says “use only the DataWise connector”. That line matters. In Marqeable’s test of an MCP connector inside a dot, the dot tried to sign in through its cloud browser when a tool didn’t fit the request. Keep your dot on the connector and never give it your DataWise password.

How do you get the reports where you work?

A blob-shaped AI agent delivering a report with a bar chart into a chat bubble while another stamps it approved

Ask your dot to send each report to the channel you already check. OpenAI says a dot carries context between ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams (OpenAI), so a Monday Search Console summary can land in your team’s SEO channel instead of waiting inside ChatGPT.

Keep in mind that connecting a messaging channel is separate from app access. OpenAI’s dots docs note that adding a contact method doesn’t grant access to your apps or computer, so the DataWise plugin still has to be connected in ChatGPT for the reports to contain real data.

What are the limits worth knowing?

Three honest constraints apply: scheduled checks draw on your DataWise data allowance, a dot’s reliability over weeks of unattended work is still unproven, and the dot’s summary is only as accurate as its reading of the numbers.

Scheduled research uses your daily allowance. DataWise tools that request live provider data, like keyword research, competitor gaps and AI mentions, count against a daily data allowance per member, and rate limits apply. Reading your stored Search Console, rank tracking and AI tracker data doesn’t draw on it, which is why the two weekly jobs above are the cheapest to run. Your usage is visible in DataWise settings.

Dots are new. OpenAI launched them less than two weeks before I wrote this, and early users on the OpenAI developer forum are still reporting rollout issues. Read the first few reports properly before you start trusting them at a glance.

It’s still an AI reading a table. A dot can misread or round a number. Check anything that drives a real decision inside DataWise first.

Is a dot better than a normal ChatGPT chat for SEO?

For recurring monitoring, yes. For one-off research, not really. A dot’s advantage is that it remembers the job and runs it on schedule, so it can tell you what changed since last week. A normal chat is better when you want to steer the analysis step by step.

I’d split it like this. Use a regular chat with DataWise connected for keyword research, page rewrites and audits, where the ChatGPT SEO prompts work well. Hand your dot the checks that need to happen every week whether you remember or not. Between them, the routine work gets done and you spend your own time on the decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Do conversations with my dot count against my ChatGPT usage limits? No. OpenAI’s dots docs say conversations with your dot don’t count toward ChatGPT usage limits. Tasks your dot starts or manages in ChatGPT Work or Codex do count toward those products’ limits, and eligible plans get extended limits for deeper work during the first month after launch.

Can I use dots if I’m in the UK or the EU? Not on ChatGPT Pro at launch. Pro access excludes the EEA, the UK and Switzerland. Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out worldwide, so a business workspace is the route in those regions for now (OpenAI).

What happens to what my dot learned if I disconnect DataWise? It keeps it. A dot builds memories from your conversations and connected apps, and disconnecting an app doesn’t erase what it already learned. Resetting the dot deletes its conversations, memories and scheduled tasks together (OpenAI help: getting started with your dot).

How do I stop a recurring SEO report? Open Scheduled in your dot and cancel the task there. Recurring tasks are cancelled separately from delegated work, which you stop in Activity (OpenAI).

Does the DataWise connector work outside ChatGPT? Yes. The same server address works in Claude, Claude Desktop, Claude Code and any client that supports remote MCP. The Claude setup is in my Claude Opus 5.5 SEO tutorial, and the DataWise MCP page covers every client.

Get started

If you have a dot, connecting it to DataWise takes a few minutes, and the connector is included with your AI Ranking membership. Set it up once in ChatGPT, test it in a normal chat, then give your dot its first weekly job.
